Morphology and Structure
Cells are spindle-shaped, the cells exhibit high metaboly, the anterior end is obliquely rounded, the posterior end is narrowed with a colorless point. The cell is enclosed in a cytoplasmic membrane, to which an elastic, spirally striated periplast is adjacent from the outside. The cell contains one large stellate chromatophore located in the center of the protoplast and containing a pyrenoid with a paramylon sheath. In the posterior half of the cell, one large oval nucleus is localized. The organism swims with the help of a single flagellum located at the anterior end, the length of which is approximately equal to the length of the cell.
Cultivation
- Nutrient Medium: BG-11 medium (liquid and agarized)
- Temperature: 25–28 °C
- Light Intensity: 40–80 µmol photons/m²/s
- Photoperiod: 16:8 h (light/dark)
- pH: 6.5–7.0
Physiological Characteristics
neutrophile, mesophile, autotroph, photophilic.
Long-term Preservation Conditions
maintained on liquid and 1.5–2.0% agarized BG-11 medium. The preservation temperature is 10–12 °C, light intensity is 10–20 µmol photons/m²/s, with a 12:12 h (light/dark) photoperiod. Subculturing is carried out as needed, but at least once every 2–4 months.
